The struggle over attending graduate school to pursue public health or going to medical school ended with her graduating with a second bachelors degree in nursing. Following this, Spangler attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she completed her PhD in Maternal and Child Health and Anthropology in 2009.
