Over the past century, healthinequalities have shifted from being driven mainly by infectious diseases, poor sanitation, and hazardous working conditions to being shaped by chronic diseases, lifestyle factors, and unequal access to modern healthcare.
As embedded members of the community, CHWs can tackle some of these inequities and approach healthcare holistically. They know if there are issues with transportation, water sanitation, housing, violence, and more. Their role brings us closer to universal health coverage, which cannot be achieved without consideration of inequity.
